Taxes. Alberta exhibits the lowest combined federal/provincial personal income tax rates in Canada. There is no provincial sales tax, a comparatively low fuel tax, and no payroll or general capital tax. Statistics Canada reported that Alberta's after-tax income is the highest across Canada.
Labour Force. Alberta finished 2008 with an unemployment rate of 4.4% and a recent report by economists Todd Hirsch and Dan Sumner confirms that "the jobs market in the province remains among the best in North America."
Provincial Budget. The 2008 provincial budget provides Alberta with 14th consecutive surplus.The debt-free province announced numerous additional spending projects including healthcare and education spending increases of 21%, and 36% for municipal infrastructure. Charitable donations and education tax credits will increase. The 2007-1010 Capital Plan also includes the phase-in of the Municipal Sustainability Initiative, which will provide $1.4 billion annual support for meeting municipal sustainability objectives.
